Amethyst - February's Birthstone

Wednesday, 1 February 2017 08:26:00 Europe/London

The word Amethyst comes from the Greek word 'Amethystos' which means remedy against drunkenness and a prevention to overcome addiction. The Ancient Greeks believed that the stone protected the wearer from drunkenness and enabled them to keep a balanced mindset - which is why it was common to find wine goblets from carved from Amethyst.

Amethyst are a violet variety of quartz which varies in depth of colour, from a dark 'royal' purple to a lighter lilac, lavender, or mauve. On average it would take between 39 and 43 years for an Amethyst to be formed from within a cavity of volcanic rock. The best varieties are usually found in Sri Lanka, Brazil, and the Far East. A better quality Amethyst has a high degree of transparency and a rich purple colour.

It is noted that Amethysts are the suggested gem to give on the 4th, 6th, and 17th wedding anniversaries. It is also the birthstone for the month of February and the official gem for Wednesdays, Jupiter and those born under the sign of Pisces. It symbolises deep love, happiness, and wealth.
